¿He pensado en ello? ¿Qué bicicleta me llevo?
The bike … I am planning a Pilgrimage to Santiago by bicycle along 2400 kilometers … Have I thought about it? What bike should I ride? Well, first thing is to see the bikes that people who are dedicated to ride this way do have.
You can see many more in Fully Loaded Bikes. The point is that I like the Koga Miyata, the Wanderer and the Viva, but they will not be ‘my bike’ at this time. I learn a little bit and I’m looking for my bike. In one of the galleries of Rodadas I saw this other bike: the Lluis Trell’s Orbea Arama and I like how it is equipped.
The Orbea Arama was no longer for sale but had a similar one, the Orbea Artea that neither is now. The downside was the price, 1400Euro, so I discarded it.
Then I go to the store. After looking and visiting several stores I bought mine in Bicicletas Belga, in Valencia.
The bike is a Giant Ligero RS4. It’s not the Koga Miyata or the Wanderer I’d expected… but of course is very good for what I thought.
This will be my first cruise. I do not know if it’s something I will like it or not and I consider myself inexperienced so I decided to buy a mid range bike that met the expectations of my trip and not too costly. So I watched and I really like the Ghost TR1300. It is a truly beautiful bike and appropriate to my needs. I was featured in Valencia for 580 € and was almost convinced. This was in Orange Bikes (Jose).
I had seen another one before, now discontinued, that I like without actually convince … Giant Expression was the predecessor of the Giant Tourer. It was cheaper, but out of the way and did not have the things that basically was looking … now see. The Expression was at Rafael Abad (Martin), also in Valencia, for 345Euro with Shimano Tourney and for 388Euro with a Shimano Nexus 7.
I also visited TodoBici (Javi), Mecano Bike (Giorgio) and The Bike Room (Josevi).
The question is that I didn’t intend to go to Bicicletas Belga and yet in the end I went to have a look. There (Jordi and Pablo took care of me) I was watching a TREK Navigator 2.0 with 26 “wheels. It seemed that was looking good however, and while watching it and when going to see a SCOTT Sub35 I saw the Giant Ligero RS4 and asked them for it. It had the accessories that I liked on the Ghost one but also in this case without front suspension that is what I wanted. We looked at the size and I went to El Puerto with my doubts, thinking one thing and another until I decided and returned in the afternoon to buy it.
But why this and not the Ghost or the Rafael Abad’s one? … Well, I comment. The impression I got about Martín when I went to Rafael Abad’s was truly very good. He informed me, taught me and advised me to buy a product that they had there with some characteristics very consistent with the selling price, no doubt. But I finally wasn’t convinced with the deraileur set, a Shimano Tourney, the lamp, the wheels which were Continental Bike Tires or guards and the lowrider, also had front suspension and had to install a lowrider with clamps on the fork itself. And they didn’t have the RS4 Ligero so I couldn’t see or hear about it until later, when I went to Bicicletas Belga.
The Ghost is the one that I liked, I had previously seen on the web before going to Valencia and I thought it was the choosen. However, although the explanations of Jóse were spacious and very interesting honestly, there were two details that removed buying the bike there from my mind. First to speak in a bad way about the shop where I had been before after I commented him about the bike I had seen. And second, the attempt to sell rearbags from CityVel for 90 € each pair of bags of 16 liters (32 liters) and 60 € the pair of bags of 10 liters (20 liters). He said that Ortlieb was extremely expensive . These rearbags from CityVel are woven with a ripstop nylon lining inside, not waterproof but with a ‘protection’ for water. If you search the web you are not going to find them and Jóse alleged that they have been replaced by ABUS bags (I have not been able to verify this.) It turns out that I like that sellers try to sell a bike or or something but I don’t like they consider like if I were stupid. Serve the following example: Ortlieb Back Roller Classic, the pair of 40 liters, 109 € and is not waterproof, but is that they are ‘underwater-proof IP64 measuerement’. There is not much difference in price, right?.
In short, they inspired me confidence and security at the time of showing the product. I was also well attended when I said that I wanted to test and they put the pedals and inflated the wheels leaving what they had in their hands… after all, that’s what you are looking, that is what makes the difference because it’s not only the characteristics of a product … there’s more.
Another question is what has the Ligero RS4 that I liked? It has the same that the Ghost but with another frame and cheaper. If anyone has doubts about the quality of a Giant bicycle frame, I sincerely hope he does not have a Specialized or a Trek one. Giant is the largest bicycle manufacturer in the world. It has factories in Europe, China and Taiwan and of course, I doubt not, makes for many more brands that you think. But what interested me were also the accessories. The SKS fenders are the frictionless dynamo that’s integrated in the front axle, a Shimano DH3N20 which gives 6V and 3W, the lamp is Busch und Müller with a light sensor and automatic ignition, and the deraileur is the Shimano Alivio. it has Schwalbe Delta Cruiser 700 tires. At the end, the bike cost me € 450.
